West Africa's Ebola outbreak sparked international concern in 2014, killing more than 11,310 people and infecting more than 28,000. The outbreak is now the most fatal and widespread ever recorded, with the CDC confirming the first travel-associated Ebola case in the U.S. in September 2014.

While West Africa's 2014 outbreak represents the largest in terms of scale, it was by no means the first. The following CDC timeline lists all major Ebola outbreaks since the virus' discovery in 1976 and was last updated Nov. 9:
