The importance of perioperative services in the leap to value-based care

Emily Rappleye -

Value-based care initiatives are rising to the top of the healthcare agenda this year, especially following HHS' announcement in January of its new goal to transition 50 percent of Medicare payments to alternative payment models by 2018.

As payment models begin to shift into these new arrangements, hospitals must pay special attention to the operating room. For most hospitals, perioperative services are critical to the transition: These services account for 65 percent of hospital revenue, according to Surgical Directions, a Chicago-based perioperative and anesthesia consulting firm.

Plus, as The Wall Street Journal recently reported, this move to value-based care and the associated federal penalties put increasing pressure on ORs to meet rising quality expectations. Anywhere from 46 to 65 percent of adverse hospital events are related to surgery, according to data cited in the report.

In light of these transitions, healthcare systems are challenged to adjust their strategies to drive perioperative performance, reduce costs and engage surgeons and anesthesia providers.
