A tourist infected with the new strain of coronavirus, linked to the pneumonia outbreak in China, is being treated in a hospital in Thailand, World Health Organization officials confirmed Jan. 13.
The tourist was traveling to Thailand from Wuhan, China, where the pneumonia outbreak was first reported in early January. Forty-one people have been sickened by the new strain of coronavirus, and one person has died.
The case identified in Thailand is the first reported outside of China, the Bangkok Post reports.
The tourist, a 61-year-old woman, was being treated in an isolation ward. She is recovering and is expected to be discharged in a few days. She was hospitalized Jan. 8 after being diagnosed with mild pneumonia.
The WHO has issued a guidance on identifying the new virus, which is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted between animals and people.
On Jan. 6, the CDC issued a travel notice on the outbreak.
