Using UV disinfection in addition to routine terminal cleaning of rooms was not effective in reducing hospital-acquired vancomycin-resistant enterococcus and Clostridium difficile among stem cell transplant recipients, according to a study published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

Researchers examined hospital-acquired VRE and C. diff in a bone marrow transplant unit before and after implementation of terminal disinfection with UV on all rooms. The outcomes were measured through active surveillance and clinical surveillance.

The study period was 20 months, during which time 579 patients had 704 admissions to the unit and 2,160 surveillance tests were performed.

Researchers found no change in level or trend in the incidence of VRE or C. diff after the intervention.
