Summa Health regains approval for ER residency program

Gabrielle Masson -

Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health regained approval to train emergency medicine more than two years after the residency program lost its accreditation.

The approval from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education is effective immediately and permits Summa to recruit eight new emergency medicine residents.

Summa's accreditation was revoked in February 2017 when the ACGME cited issues resulting from an abrupt emergency room physician change on Jan 1, 2017, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The program's closure in July 2017 meant 21 emergency medicine residents trainees had to find new programs. Summa reapplied for accreditation in June 2018, but was denied.

Summa officials said their goal is to have ER residents by July 2020.
