Study: Observing Others Improves Hand Hygiene Awareness in Medical Students

Allowing medical students to act as covert observers of hand hygiene improves their awareness of the importance of hand hygiene, according to research published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Researchers followed nine medical students through their experiences in a basic hand hygiene course and workshop taught to World Health Organization standards. After the training period, students observed healthcare workers engaging in hand hygiene.

Students said they had learned a significant amount about attitudes surrounding hand hygiene compliance with respect to the WHO "My Five Moments" hand hygiene framework. They thought hand hygiene could be improved through better availability of hand hygiene products, better role modeling and more frequent small-group education, according to the article.
