Study: 1 in 10 Heart PCI Patients Readmitted Within 30 Days

A recent study showed that one in 10 percutaneous coronary intervention patients at a Minnesota hospital was readmitted within 30 days, and those patients were at higher risk of one-year mortality, according to research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

For their study, researchers assessed data on nearly 15,500 PCI patients from Jan. 1998-June 2008 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. They sought to find factors associated with 30-day readmission following PCI procedures.

Results from their analysis showed 9.4 percent of patients were readmitted within 30 days, and 0.68 percent of patients died within 30 days after discharge. Several factors were associated with an increased risk of 30-day readmission, including female sex, Medicare insurance and length of stay of more than three days.
