An international research group led by investigators at San Diego-based Scripps Research received a $129 million grant to advance the development of an HIV vaccine.
Four things to know:
1. The Scripps Consortium for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development received the seven-year grant from the National Institutes of Health.
2. The consortium's 26 researchers will use the funding to advance HIV vaccine candidates to early stage clinical trials.
3. The research will occur at 14 affiliated institutions, including Scripps Research.
4. The experimental vaccines, designed to be administered in several stages, have demonstrated long-lasting protection against several HIV strains in animal studies.
