An infant has contracted the first measles case in San Diego County this year.
The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency said that the 11-month-old recently traveled to the Philippines. The infant is currently hospitalized. Others may have been exposed to the infant at several Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente locations in San Diego.
The CDC recommends vaccinating infants, 6 to 11 months old with one dose of the measles vaccine before international travel. Children 1 year and older need two doses separated by at least 28 days before traveling abroad.
As of Aug. 1, there have been 1,172 measles cases reported in 30 states across the country this year, the highest number reported since measles was declared eliminated in 2000. In California, 64 cases have been reported this year.
