Salmonella scare prompts 6.5M-pound beef recall

JBS Tolleson, an Arizona-based meat supplier, recalled more than 6.5 million pounds of beef products Oct. 4 due to potential salmonella contamination.

Here are three things to know:

1. Fifty-seven cases of salmonella illness linked to the beef were reported in across 16 states between Aug. 5 and Sept. 6.

2. The meat producer issued the recall after an initial health inspection identified JBS's raw ground beef products as the probable source of the salmonella illnesses.

3. The recalled products were packaged between July 26 and Sept. 7. JBS sold the meat nationwide under brand names such as Walmart, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Showcase, Showcase Walmart and JBS Generic, according to CNN.

"FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase," the USDA said.
