Salmonella outbreak tied to pet hedgehogs, CDC says

Megan Knowles -

The outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to pet hedgehogs has sickened 11 people, including six children under age 12, according to the CDC.

The cases were reported from eight states. One person has been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence found contact with pet hedgehogs is the likely source of this outbreak, the CDC said.

The CDC said people should thoroughly wash their hands after touching a hedgehog, avoid kissing or snuggling them and keep them from roaming freely in places where food is stored.
