Salmonella cases linked to dog treats rise to 143

The number of people infected in a nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to contact with pig ear dog treats has increased to 143, according to the CDC.

The number of people infected increased by 16 in the span of a month, from 127 on July 31 to 143 as of Aug. 26. Thirty-three people have been hospitalized, up from 26 at the end of July. No deaths have been reported.

Iowa has continued to report the most cases, with 23, followed by New York, with 16, and Michigan, with 14.

People are getting infected after handling the treats or caring for dogs who ate the treats. No single supplier of pig ear dog treats has been identified as the source of the outbreak, and three companies have recalled their products.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.
