Both Pepperidge Farm and Mondelez International recalled lines of their staple products, such as Goldfish and Ritz crackers, due to fears of salmonella contamination in their whey seasoning.
Pepperidge Farm issued a recall July 23 after an ingredient supplier informed the company the whey powder used for seasoning was possibly contaminated, according to CBS News.
The recall covers the following four Goldfish varieties: Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel.
Mondelez International is also in the process of recalling lines of Ritz cracker products after identifying a potential salmonella risk linked to the whey powder. Two individuals fell ill after eating the Ritz crackers, according to The New York Times.
The recall involves the following Ritz cracker products: Ritz Bits Cheese, Ritz cheese cracker sandwiches and Ritz bacon cracker sandwiches.
"As there are likely other food products made by other manufacturers that also use this common ingredient, there may be other recalls initiated in the coming days," the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA is working with all the companies affected by the ingredient contamination on circulating the public health alert.
