Patients with chronic conditions are overwhelmed, study finds

About 40 percent of patients with chronic conditions say they are not able to sustain current investments of energy, time and money in healthcare through their lives, according to a study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Researchers collected data between Jan. 1, 2017, and Oct. 1, 2018, for 2,413 patients with chronic conditions in France.

They matched participants' answers to the Treatment Burden Questionnaire to a yes/no anchor question: Think about all the things you do to care for yourself. Do you think you could continue investing the same amount of time, energy and money in your healthcare lifelong?

Thirty-eight percent of the patients reported that they would be unable to continue the same investment of energy, time and money in healthcare throughout their lives.
