Patient Safety Tool: Outpatient Facility Infection Control Assessment

Staff -

The Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority offers a free infection control assessment tool for ambulatory surgery centers.

"Monitoring the Use of Evidence-Based Best Practices for Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections in Ambulatory Surgery" accompanies the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority's new report on infection control practice implementation, "Strategies to Fully Implement Infection Control Practices in Pennsylvania Ambulatory Surgical Facilities." The tool assesses ambulatory surgery facilities' compliance in five areas discussed in the report: surveillance techniques, sterilization and high-level disinfection, safe injections and point-of-care devices, standardized educational programs and environmental infection control.

The tool can help leaders identify gaps in infection control practices and develop plans to close the gaps. The assessment lists evidence-based best practices for which leaders can track implementation and describe a remediation plan when implementation scores are below 100 percent.
