Since the Ohio Solutions for Patient Safety initiative began in 2009, it has offered medical personnel detailed information on how to reduce surgical-site infections, urinary tract infections and adverse drug events as well as preventing falls.

Officials with the project and leaders of Ohio pediatric hospitals estimate the reduced HAIs and harm incidents saved patients’ families, payers and taxpayers roughly $6 million statewide between January 2012 and October 2014 alone.

The project expanded to more than 80 pediatric hospitals in 33 states since its inception in Ohio, across which realized savings are estimated at around $62 million since 2012, according to the report.

Despite the progress, there is more work to be done. Roughly 159 children were still harmed each month in 2013 at the 80 hospitals participating in the initiative.
