Patient death confirmed at Connecticut hospital

Health officials reported a recent patient death at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown, reports the Journal Inquirer.

NBC affiliate WVIT first reported the death Aug. 27, and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services confirmed to the Journal Inquirer that a patient had recently died at the state-run psychiatric hospital.

Sources told WVIT a male patient in his 50s died at the hospital last weekend. The patient had a history of preventable bowel obstruction issues that hospital staff may have overlooked, according to the report.

"Due to state and federal patient privacy laws, the department is unable to provide any additional information on this matter," Diana Shaw, a spokesperson for DMHAS, told Becker's via email. "As healthcare providers, the loss of a patient is difficult to us all. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the patient's family and loved ones during this time."
