Over 100 students hit with norovirus at University of Michigan

Brian Zimmerman -

On Saturday the University of Michigan confirmed a norovirus outbreak on their Ann Arbor campus. Upwards of 100 students have sought treatment for vomiting and diarrhea.

Robert Winfield, MD, the university's chief health officer said in regards to the number of students reporting symptoms, "We believe that this number does not reflect the actual extent of the illness, as students are generally following our advice to self-isolate in their rooms."

The university has implemented a rigorous cleaning procedure for residence and dining halls. Officials have also stressed the importance of good hand hygiene.

This is the second university-related norovirus outbreak this month. Officials from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., confirmed on Feb. 16, after some mystery, a norovirus infected more than 200 of their students.
