Ohio hospital seeking volunteers for Alzheimer's study

Researchers at the the Brain Health and Memory Center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center are now accepting volunteers for an Alzheimer's prevention study, according to local CBS affiliate WKBN 27.

Currently there are about 50,000 people with Alzheimer's in Ohio, and by 2025, it is projected to affect 250,000 people across the state.

"Many of them do have a family history of Alzheimer's disease, although that is not a requirement. Ultimately, they will be screened for their genetics," said Alan Lerner, MD, director of the Brain Health and Memory Center at the UH Cleveland Medical Center.

Researchers are looking for people with a specific kind of gene that increases someone's risk of developing Alzheimer's. The volunteers who will be screened for that gene must be 60 to 75 years old.
