New York proposes new disciplinary rules for physician misconduct

Gabrielle Masson -

Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed new disciplinary laws for state physicians and medical professionals, according to The Leader.

The proposal, a part of Mr. Cuomo's 2020 State of the State agenda, would eliminate lifetime licenses issued to physicians and replace them with a regular renewal process.

"The first responsibility of any medical professional is do no harm and when someone violates that oath they must be held appropriately accountable," Mr. Cuomo said in a statement cited by The Leader.

The governor's plan would let the state health commissioner confirm investigations about medical workers, which is currently illegal. Based on a public-risk assessment, the health commissioner could also suspend a physician's license at the start of an investigation.

The legislation would also make new details about physicians' practices public.
