New Hampshire nurse on leave after newborn mix-up

Gabrielle Masson -

Concord (N.H.) Hospital placed a nurse on administrative leave after she gave a mother the wrong newborn to feed Sept. 8, according to WHDH

The infant received five milliliters of formula — part of the infant's care plan — from the incorrect patient, a hospital spokesperson told Becker's via email. The error was discovered within 10 minutes, and the infant was returned to the correct mother.

"This was an unfortunate case of human error," the spokesperson said. "Both mothers have been informed of the error, and no harm to the infant occurred."

Standard protocol requires Concord Hospital staff members to verify infant and mother identities via hospital wristbands. The nurse involved in the situation has acknowledged her error. The hospital has placed her on administrative leave while it conducts an internal investigation into the incident.
