Mumps started spreading in September 2014 at a campus of University of Idaho. Students there and those in close contact with them should check the status of their measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, according to the report. People who have one dose of the vaccine should get a second shot, and people with no record of the MMR vaccine should receive two doses.
The MMR vaccine is 88 percent effective at protecting against the mumps, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and there has been a more than 99 percent decrease in mumps cases in the U.S. since the pre-vaccine era. However, in 2014 more than 1,000 people reportedly had mumps, including several NHL players.
