Ms. Miller is a nurse at Hospice of the EUP, a county-owned hospice provider based in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
A snowstorm earlier this week forced Chippewa County’s health department to close, marking the third weather-related closure in 23 years, according to Ms. Miller.
“We got a call from a hospice patient who really needed to have a nurse visit and the nurse that was working that took the call lives … about 20 miles away,” she told 9&10 News. “She knew I lived fairly close to this patient and asked if I could go over.”
The storm brought large snowdrifts and blizzard-like conditions that made driving unsafe, so Ms. Miller strapped on her snowshoes and trekked about half a mile to the patient’s home.
“I left there feeling good that I was able to help them,” Ms. Miller told 9&10 News. “I think they felt reassured that I was there.”
