Medicare to Cover Yearly Primary Care Visits to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease

CMS will start covering yearly primary care visits for intensive behavioral therapy for cardiovascular disease.

Intensive behavioral therapy for cardiovascular disease includes three components: encouraging aspirin use for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (under certain circumstances); screening for high blood pressure in adults; and intensive behavioral counseling for adults with risk factors for cardiovascular and diet-related chronic disease.

CMS determined the evidence is adequate to conclude that intensive behavioral therapy is reasonable and necessary for the prevention or early detection of illness. Intensive behavioral therapy for cardiovascular disease is also recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
