Brian Zimmerman -

The National Cancer Institute recently awarded University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center in Iowa City and Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic $12.4 million to renew the Specialized Program of Research Excellence for lymphoma research.

The SPORE funds support clinical trials, early pilot projects and new investigator in lymphoma research at both organizations. The University of Iowa and Mayo Clinic collaboration, founded in 2002, is the nation's longest standing SPORE for lymphoma research.

"We are thrilled to have our lymphoma SPORE renewed for another five years," said George Weiner, MD, director and principal investigator of the SPORE at the University of Iowa. "It is particularly exciting to see advances we have made being applied worldwide to improve patient care."

NCI has provided the collaborative effort with $46 million since 2002.
