Arizona heath officials have threatened to revoke Phoenix-based Hacienda HealthCare's license after staff members discovered maggots in a patient's wound, reports the Arizona Republic.
The incident occurred June 12 at the same long-term care facility where a patient in a vegetative state gave birth in December. In the most recent incident, staff members discovered a "small number" of maggots near a 28-year-old patient's surgical incision, according to Hacienda spokesperson David Leibowitz.
Hacienda self-reported the incident and immediately sent the patient to the hospital for treatment. The facility inspected all patients with surgical incisions and did not find any other evidence of maggots, according to Mr. Leibowitz.
State health officials said they intend to revoke Hacienda's license, which the healthcare provider received April 26 under a new state law meant to boost Arizona's oversight of long-term care facilities.
"The Notice of Intent to Revoke allows for the department to have increased accountability and oversight of the facility and does not mean Hacienda must immediately shut down," officials said in a June 15 statement emailed to Arizona Republic.
