The Leapfrog Group released its Hospital Safety Score in November, which gave hospitals a score of A, B, C, D or F based on 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data, with “A” representing the safest hospitals. The Leapfrog Group initially gave TCMH a grade of “F,” which hospital administration and staff refuted.
Hospital administration said in the release that the low grade was due to the fact that the hospital did not participate in The Leapfrog Group’s voluntary survey or other surveys, such as the American Hospital Association survey, which were used to score hospitals. The Leapfrog Group stated, “Their ‘F’ had nothing to do with whether they reported to the Leapfrog Hospital Survey or not. We simply did not use Leapfrog data to calculate a score if we did not have it. Nationally over 350 hospitals that do not report to Leapfrog earned [an] ‘A.’
TCMH noted that the data it submits to CMS, which is available on the Hospital Compare website, show higher quality outcomes than an “F” would indicate. The Leapfrog Group used only a portion of CMS data in its scoring methodology, according to the news release.
The hospital contacted The Leapfrog Group to notify them of the discrepancy and the group changed the hospital’s rating to “score pending.” The Leapfrog Group is reviewing data submitted by TCMH and confirming results with data from CMS, according to the news release.
Correction: A previous version of this article stated that The Leapfrog Group retracted the “F” score. That is incorrect. We apologize for the error. The article was also updated to reflect a statement by The Leapfrog Group regarding its scoring methodology.
