Joint Commission to suspend Top Performers list until 2017

Staff -

In the introduction to its annual report, Joint Commission revealed it will be suspending its Top Performers list for 2016, resuming in 2017 after taking a year to reevaluate the program. The Top Performers list recognizes hospitals nationwide for high performance on key quality measures.

"[D]ue to the evolving national performance measure environment particularly within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services — we have decided to place the current Top Performer program in hiatus for a year to be reevaluated," Mark Chassin, MD, president and CEO of The Joint Commission wrote in its annual report. "While we won't be recognizing Top Performer hospitals in the fall of 2016, I am confident that hospitals will continue to improve, and that in 2017, we will return with a refreshed program that will better fit the evolving national measure environment while supporting Top Performers and hospitals on track to achieving this recognition."

According to the report, the last two years have brought many changes in performance measurement for hospitals. In place of the 2016 measurements and list, The Joint Commission will offer programming that includes recognition categories, education opportunities, an annual report and a strong focus on partnering with hospitals to provide improved care.
