Joint Commission's new requirements for suicide prevention take effect July 1

The Joint Commission will assess accredited hospitals' performance on new requirements for suicide prevention starting July 1.

Three things to know:

1. The accrediting body's National Patient Safety Goals will feature seven new and revised performance requirements based on current research and expert recommendations.

2. The requirements will apply to all hospitals and behavioral healthcare organizations.

3. The new requirements include screening behavioral health patients for suicide risk and ensuring physical facilities do not contain ligature risks.
