The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security held a pandemic preparedness exercise Oct. 18 in Baltimore to highlight the economic threats of global disease outbreaks.

Johns Hopkins hosted the event with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The simulation challenged 15 leaders with backgrounds in business, government and public health to address realistic economic and policy issues involving disease pandemics.

Chris Elias, president of global development for the Gates Foundation, said the simulation helps leaders learn how to respond to pandemics from a global health perspective and understand the economic consequences of poor preparation.
