Beth Beaty, RN, a nurse at Roper Hospital in Charleston, S.C., is turning medical waste into art, according to Nurse.org.

Ms. Beaty used discarded medication caps and other supplies she found at work to create a mosaic depicting Charleston's famous Rainbow Row of historical houses. The mosaic now hangs in a hallway at Roper Hospital. She spent five years collecting the caps, and it took her one year to create the mosaic.

Ms. Beaty, who has a background in graphic design and photography in addition to her nursing expertise, told Nurse.org that she started using discarded medical supplies to create art. She began creating Christmas ornaments for her co-workers using felt and medication caps when she had taken time off work during her fight against breast cancer.

"I really hope it will inspire everyone to keep working hard and to be brave," she said to Nurse.org. "The patients are going through a lot. Hopefully, it takes their mind somewhere else peaceful for a moment."
