Hospital parking has significant impact on patient satisfaction for seniors, survey finds

Staff -

Seniors are the fastest growing age group and account for 68 percent of hospital discharges. They also have very high standards for a facility's parking, according to a recent survey.

First impressions about a facility's parking are second only to first impressions of its lobby, according to the survey, conducted by Parking BOXX. These are followed by impressions of the facility's grounds and exterior.

"Discovering that seniors believe the patient experience extends into the parking lot is a valuable insight," Renee Cleary, CTO of Parking BOXX, said in a statement. "Administrators constantly seek out unknowns in the patient satisfaction paradigm. This study uncovers an important influencer in that regard, namely parking, and offers insights into successfully meeting patient expectations in that area."

Here are five other survey takeaways:

• 46 percent of all seniors find paying for parking at a machine to be confusing.
• 94 percent of men ages 65-74 have valid driver's licenses.
• 97 percent of seniors had a negative impression of run-down or rusted parking equipment.
• 30 percent of seniors are frustrated by how far they are required to walk to pay for parking.
• 63 percent of seniors prefer to pay by debit or credit card for parking.
