Heart Attack Mortality Rates in U.S. Hospitals on the Decline

The heart attack mortality rate for U.S. hospitals dropped from 16.6 percent for the period of July 2005 through June 2008 to 16.2 percent for the period of July 2006 through June 2009, according to CMS data analyzed in a report by USA Today.

The nearly half-a-percentage-point drop suggests that hospitals are getting better at treating Medicare patients. Even hospitals with lower than and higher than average death rates experienced a decline, according to the report.

However, despite declining mortality rates, nearly 25 percent of heart failure patients and 20 percent of heart attack patients return to the hospital within 30 days, according to the report.
