Healthcare startup to list outpatient surgeon quality scores online

Staff -

MPIRICA Health, a startup focused on quality transparency in the healthcare industry, has announced plans to list more than 1 million outpatient quality scores for individual physicians and hospitals online.

According to MPIRICA, this is the first time scoring of surgeons has been done for outpatient procedures.

Surgeon and hospital quality scores provided by MPIRICA will be a three-digit number based on four years of individual provider outcomes for a specific procedure, closely resembling a batting average of success for surgeons on each procedure. The scores will cover more than 1,000 procedures for roughly 40,000 surgeons and 5,000 hospitals.

MPIRICA already has such a quality score online for inpatient procedures. To put these scores together, the company uses a predictive analytics model honed over more than 10 years, Shakil Haroon, the co-founder and CEO of MPIRICA, tells Becker's. The score includes Medicare data for observed outcomes, but "the observed outcomes are a relatively small aspect of our approach," he says, as it also pulls information from commercial and clinical databases.

The resulting three-digit score is given after comparing hospital or physician observed and predicted outcomes. Mr. Haroon believes the widespread use of the score can improve patient safety and overall healthcare lower costs.
