GoodRx offers free coupons to slash price of generic Tamiflu

The CDC estimates the portion of Americans hospitalized for influenza now matches levels seen during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic — and rising drug costs are only contributing to the increasing number of people hospitalized for flu-like symptoms.

The number of people in hospitals with flu-like illnesses increased from 7.1 percent to 7.7 percent, which matches the highest rate of flu-related hospitalizations recorded during the last 15 years, according to a CDC summary of the flu update released last week.

While physicians nationwide have taken to prescribing Tamiflu and its generic counterpart to lessen the severity of the illness, many people still have trouble paying for the medication, which ranges from $135 to $140, on average, according to WFMY News 2.

However, GoodRx, an online drug pricing comparison platform, is offering coupons for the generic version of Tamiflu, which is available at most pharmacies nationwide. The coupon slashes the price of the generic drug, leaving patients to pay $60 or less, on average, depending on which pharmacy they visit.

The amount of the coupon comes off the retail price and is not discounted from a patient's insurance copay, according to WFMY News 2.
