A Legionnaires' outbreak linked to an Atlanta hotel is now the largest recorded in Georgia's history, a spokesperson for the state health department told CNN Aug. 11.
Health officials have confirmed 11 Legionnaires' cases and one death linked to the outbreak, along with 63 probable cases, according to Nancy Nydam, director of communications for the Georgia Department of Public Health.
The Sheraton Atlanta voluntarily shut down July 15 so health officials could investigate the source of the infections. The hotel said it's been working closely with officials during the investigation and performing precautionary remedial activities.
"A thorough cleaning of the hotel's entire water distribution system has been completed as a precautionary measure, including cleaning, scrubbing and chlorination of all water features," Ken Peduzzi, general manager of the hotel, told CNN.
The hotel is waiting for additional test results before sharing a reopening date.
