Flu vaccine not linked to miscarriage, study finds

Undergoing a miscarriage was not associated with receiving an inactivated influenza vaccine, according to a study published in Vaccine.

Researchers conducted a case-control study over three influenza seasons in the Vaccine Safety Datalinks: 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15. They matched women who had miscarriages with women who had live births. They examined 1,236 women who had a miscarriage.

The study shows that among 627 matched pairs vaccinated in the previous season, there was no association found between vaccination in the one-to 28-day risk window and miscarriage. Additionally, there was no association found in other risk windows or among women who were not vaccinated in the previous season.

"These findings lend support to current recommendations for influenza vaccination at any time during pregnancy, including the first trimester," study authors concluded.
