Electronic Prescribing Initiative to Prevent Medication Errors Grows 33%

Staff -
The Southeast Michigan ePrescribing Initiative has grown approximately 33 percent since last year.

SEMI was launched in 2005 to promote electronic prescribing among physicians in Southeast Michigan. Its primary objectives are to boost adoption and use of e-prescribing, measure the impact of e-prescribing technology on improving patient safety and reduce prescription drug costs.

An analysis conducted in December 2011 on a sample of 23 million prescriptions written by SEMI physicians since the program began showed a severe or moderate drug-to-drug alert was sent to physicians for more than 6.2 million prescriptions. Physicians also received nearly 923,000 medication allergy alerts. These alerts led to prescription changes or cancellations by the prescribing physician.
