Ebola transmission falling in Congo, WHO says

Health officials reported 40 confirmed Ebola cases Sept. 13, marking the lowest weekly uptick since March, according to ABC News.

As of Sept. 15, the World Health Organization has reported 3,129 confirmed and probable cases linked to the outbreak, along with 2,095 deaths.

While health officials noted there are promising signs of reduced Ebola transmission, "it remains too soon to tell if this trend will persist," the WHO said in a Sept. 12 update.

The updated case count comes amid news that Congo's former Minister of Health Oly Ilunga, MD, PhD, who oversaw the country's outbreak response, was arrested last month for allegedly mishandling Ebola funds. Dr. Ilunga stepped down July 22 after losing his role as head of the outbreak response.
