Ebola patient rejects treatment, flees to city of 1M in Congo

Harrison Cook -

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is up to 132 confirmed and probable cases, making it the eighth-largest epidemic ever recorded for the virus, according to STAT's Morning Rounds e-newsletter released Sept. 11.

Health officials confirmed a new Ebola case Sept. 10. The patient fell ill in early August. His blood test was negative, but his sperm sample tested positive, according to a report from the Center for Infectious Disease and Policy Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota. The patient refused admittance to an Ebola treatment center and instead went to Butembo, a city of nearly 1 million people.

Health officials on Sept. 8 confirmed two other Ebola cases reported in the city of Beni.

So far, 91 people have died from the outbreak.
