An Escherichia coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce has ended, after infecting 167 people and resulting in 85 hospitalizations, according to the CDC.
The multistate outbreak, which began in last September, was officially declared over Jan. 15. Twenty-seven states reported cases of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce from Salinas, Calif. Wisconsin reporting the highest number of cases at 35. Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois all also reported double-digit cases.
Of the 85 people hospitalized, 15 people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. There were no deaths.
The CDC is no longer advising people to avoid romaine lettuce from the Salinas region.
