Deadly fungal infection cases rise to 799

As of July 31, the number of Candida auris cases reported in the U.S. had grown to 799, according to the CDC.

There have been 769 confirmed and 30 probable cases. The number of cases has jumped by nearly 50 in one month, from 755 cases as of June 30. An additional 1,540 patients have been found to be colonized with C. auris, up from 1,474 at the end of June.

New York remains the state with the highest number of cases at 375, followed by Illinois, with 209 cases. Cases also have been reported in other countries.

The deadly emerging fungus is a type of yeast that is often multidrug-resistant and causes bloodstream, wound and ear infections. C. auris can also live on surfaces in healthcare environments.
