Coronavirus spreads, closes down China

The Chinese stock market fell more than 8 percent today as it reopened after the Chinese holiday, according to the Washington Post

More than 17,000 people have become infected and of those a little more than 2 percent have died, according to Worldometer.

Most cases remain in China. However, the virus has spread to more than 25 countries. The World Health Organization has declared it a public emergency and most airlines have stopped flying to China.

The Chinese economy, the world's 2nd largest, is largely shut down for the time being. Currently, the world is waiting to show signs that the growth curve has broken. In previous epidemics such as SARS and MERS it took some time, i.e. months, for the epidemic to crest.
