CMS revealed its Hospice Compare website Aug. 16 to help consumers evaluate hospice providers based on performance.

Here are three things to know about the tool.

1. The website provides a "snapshot" of how hospice facilities' patient preference and pain management data stack up against national averages.

2. CMS calculated the measures using electronic data received through its Hospice Item Set. The data, collected between October 2015 and September 2016, comprises information submitted by about 3,876 hospices.

3. The Hospice Quality Reporting Program, established under section 1814(i)(5) of the Social Security Act, requires the government to publicly report hospice quality measures on a CMS website.
