Best Hospital Rankings Explored at First-Ever Summit

The Mount Sinai Medical Center announced it hosted a summit on hospital ranking systems Sept. 27.

The summit, "Shaping Health Care Decisions: An Inside Look at Hospital Rankings," was the first of its kind, and discussed U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" rankings.

Hospital leaders and U.S. News editors and statisticians noted the importance of rankings in consumers' decisions, and how these rankings could improve.

Summit participants identified several factors rankings should consider, including the following:

•    Risk adjustment for socioeconomic factors and projected health outcomes.
•    Measurement of scientific and medical innovation.
•    Clinical trial participation.
•    Investment in and use of cutting-edge information such as genomics.
•    Overall patient experience.
•    Ability to share data.
•    Ability to care for patients with comorbid conditions.
•    Geographic availability of nursing home and hospice beds.
