The infant who was brought to Oak Lawn, Ill.-based Advocate Christ Medical Center after being cut out of his mother's womb has died, reports ABC News.

The family of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez confirmed the infant's death June 14, saying it was attributed to a "severe brain injury." The infant had been on life support at Advocate Christ for more than seven weeks.

Ms. Ochoa-Lopez was murdered April 23 after responding to a Facebook ad about free baby clothes. Prosecutors say two women — 46-year-old Clarisa Figueroa and her 24-year-old daughter Desiree — strangled Ms. Ochoa-Lopez and cut the infant out of her womb. Clarisa Figueroa then brought the newborn to Advocate Christ, claiming him as her own.

Illinois health officials are investigating whether Advocate Christ violated the Abuse and Neglected Children Reporting Act by not notifying authorities of the newborn until May 9.
