American College of Surgeons finalizes care quality standards for older adults: 4 things to know

Mackenzie Bean (Twitter) -

The American College of Surgeons is aiming to improve surgical quality for geriatric patients through a new set of care standards, the group announced May 14.

Four things to know:

1. ACS conducted a feasibility study on 108 proposed quality standards for geriatric surgery at 14 U.S. hospitals and one Canadian hospital.

2. Results of the study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, identified about 30 care standards that are most feasible for national implementation.

3. ACS will test these standards through a pilot program at eight hospitals before expanding them nationally.

4. The group will release the final standards in July at the ACS Quality and Safety Conference in Washington, D.C.
