Accreditation agency seeks comments on proposed birthing standards

The Joint Commission is planning to create standards around perinatal care within its hospital accreditation program.

The standards will focus on care for patients experiencing hemorrhage or severe hypertension/preeclampsia in an effort to improve patient safety.

The proposed standards include asking clinicians to use an assessment tool to determine maternal hemorrhage risk on admission to labor and delivery and the postpartum units.

Another proposed standard is requiring facilities to develop written, evidence-based procedures for measuring and remeasuring blood pressure.

If included, hospitals participating in the accreditation program will be measured based on the new perinatal standards.

The Joint Commission is gathering input on the new standards via an online survey, online form and mail.
