86 infected with norovirus at 2018 Olympic Winter Games

Brian Zimmerman -

Officials with the Korean Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday confirmed 86 cases of norovirus at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, according to USA Today.

Health officials first reported 32 cases of the virus Tuesday, before uppping the count by 54 cases Wednesday. Twelve police officers caught the illness, as well as three food service workers in the media village. Health officials have quarantined 1,2000 security workers with norovirus symptoms. The Pyeongchang organizing committee replaced these workers with 900 military police.

"In order to stop the further outbreak of the virus we're quarantining patients beginning from the diagnosis to the treatment," said Kim Hyunjun, director of the Korean CDC, according to USA Today. "We hope to minimize the damages and the spread of the norovirus, and we're implementing all the measures that we can implement."

Norovirus can be transmitted via person-to-person contact, or contact with contaminated surfaces and food. Symptoms of the virus can include stomach pain, fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
