Here are six tips for first-time nurse leaders:
1. Meet your new staff as soon as possible, and send a direct message they are a priority.
2. Always be positive and welcoming to your team. As their newfound leader, staff members look to you for direction and information, so be sure to share your thoughts, plans and ideas on staffing, patient care and more during initial meetings.
3. Remind your team that you are there to be their advocate and help them in every way possible, not just to lead and manage them.
4. Share what characteristics you think make a good leader, drawing on both positive and negative experiences, so staff members know what to expect.
5. Define your priorities for patient care and safety on the unit, and demonstrate your accountability and responsibility for helping staff members uphold these priorities.
6. Discuss your work ethic and expectations for both yourself and the team. Tell staff members you will always listen to them and value their input.
